Two decades on, Jagannath University Still Waits for Students Halls
outside Dhaka.
There are around 18,000 students in this university. But it does not have a single fully functional
residential hall. That's why students are forced to stay in expensive rented flats and mess around the city,
often far from campus.
According to academic documents, Jagannath College was established in 1884, and then it was
recognized as Jagannath University in 2005. Although the university has 11 residential halls, all
remain under illegal occupation. While two of them are still habitable, no visible action has been
taken by the administration.
A student of Jagannath University alleged that although a second campus was supposed to be built in2018 , no visible progress has been made in the past six years except for land acquisition.
The student also claimed that this situation has occurred due to a lack of proper monitoring by the
administration of the university.
Another student said that while students of other universities are focusing on both research and studies,
we are struggling to concentrate on our studies due to the lack of residential halls.
In this issue, female students face more challenges, especially concerning safety. One female student,
who asked not to be named, said, “It is difficult to find a safe place in Old Dhaka. If we return late,
landlords often question us. We are just a secure environment to live and study.”
Meanwhile, University officials claim that plans for constructing residential halls are in progress, but
they could not provide a specific date when construction might begin.
Over the years, students have taken to the streets with banners and placards demanding residential halls.
While the administration and authorities of the university have promised action multiple times, the
promise has yet to translate into real development.
Students, teachers and parents all agree that it is high time for Jagannath University to address the
urgent issue. Without it, the quality of education will continue to be at risk.
